Martin Blunt is Professor of Petroleum Engineering and Head of the Department of Earth Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. He has an MA in Natural Sciences and a PhD in Physics from Cambridge University. From 1988-1992 he was a research reservoir engineer for BP. From 1992-1999 he was on the faculty of the Department of Petroleum Engineering at Stanford University first as Assistant and then as Associate Professor. He joined Imperial College in 1999.
Prof Blunt’s research interests are in multi-phase flow in porous media, with applications to improved oil recovery, carbon sequestration and contaminant transport and clean-up. He has published over 100 research papers and is on the editorial board of three international journals. He is one of the pioneers of streamline-based simulation that is now widely used in the oil industry. He has also worked extensively on pore-scale modelling with application to the prediction of transport properties.
Prof Blunt won the Cedric Ferguson award from the SPE in 1996 and was an SPE Distinguished lecturer in 2001/2002. He has consulted on reservoir engineering topics to several major oil companies and has taught courses in reservoir engineering, simulation, fracture flow and streamlines.
